Why I Never Direct the Moments That Matter Most

A few weeks ago, my daughter turned five.

Although this isn't a wedding film, it probably explains my approach better than any words on my About page ever could.

Like every parent with a camera, I wanted to create something she could look back on one day. Not just a collection of clips, but a film that would remind her what being five actually felt like.

There was one small challenge.

She didn't want to be filmed.

At first, every time I picked up the camera, she'd tell me to stop. And honestly, I understood. Children don't perform because someone asks them to. They're happiest when they're simply being themselves.

So I put the camera down.

We played. We laughed. We celebrated her birthday.

Then, little by little, I started filming again—not by asking her to do anything, but by quietly observing the moments as they happened.

Eventually she forgot the camera was even there.

That's the film you see today.

Not a performance.

Not a script.

Just real life.

It's Exactly How I Film Weddings

People often ask how I manage to capture such natural moments during a wedding.

The answer is surprisingly simple.

I don't try to create them.

I don't ask couples to repeat a hug because I missed it.

I don't interrupt conversations.

I don't stop someone halfway through a laugh so I can move them into better light.

Instead, I spend the day watching.

Listening.

Anticipating.

The most meaningful moments don't happen because a videographer directs them.

They happen because people forget the camera exists.

Whether it's a father seeing his daughter in her wedding dress for the first time, a nervous smile before the ceremony, grandparents quietly holding hands during the speeches, or children running around the dance floor, those are the memories worth preserving.

They're impossible to recreate.

If you're looking for a wedding videographer, one of the most important decisions you'll make is choosing someone whose approach matches the way you want to remember your day.

You can watch some of my documentary wedding films and notice that every story is built around genuine emotion rather than direction.

A Cinematic Film Doesn't Need to Be Staged

There's a common misconception that cinematic wedding films have to be carefully directed.

I don't believe that.

For me, "cinematic" isn't about asking people to act.

It's about how a story is observed and told.

It's thoughtful composition.

Beautiful natural light.

Meaningful sound.

Careful pacing.

Music that supports emotion rather than replacing it.

And above all, genuine human moments.

The camera should enhance the story, not become part of it.

Natural sound is one of the most powerful storytelling tools I use because it brings you back to the emotion of the day in a way music alone never can.

Why This Little Film Means So Much to Me

Of all the films I've made, this one feels especially personal.

Not only because it's my daughter, but because it reminded me why I picked up a camera in the first place.

One day she'll be older.

She probably won't remember every detail of turning five.

But she'll be able to watch this film and see herself exactly as she was—laughing, playing, exploring, completely unaware that these ordinary little moments would one day become precious.

That's exactly what I hope every couple feels when they watch their wedding film years later.

Not that they're watching a beautifully produced video.

But that, for a few minutes, they're transported back to one of the happiest days of their lives.

Exactly as it happened.

Watch the Film

If you'd like to see what this approach looks like outside of a wedding, you can watch my daughter's fifth birthday film below.

I hope you'll notice something that means a lot to me.

Almost nothing in it was directed.

Everything that matters simply happened.

And that's exactly how I believe the best stories should be told.
